Marcus Aurelius was chosen by Governor Hadrian to be his last successor. In 161, Aurelius ruled over the Roman Empire with his brother Verus. War and sickness threatened Rome on every side. Aurelius held his territory, but became weak as governor after the death of his brother Verus. His son Commodus later became governor in 177, three years before Aurelius died on March 17, 180.
