My life is perfect even when it’s not.
Ellen DeGeneres
Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s about knowing and accepting who you are.
When you take risks you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail, and both are equally important.
It’s failure that gives you the proper perspective on success.
“I represent happiness to a lot of people. I want to keep myself as open and as nonjudgmental as possible. Before the show was picked up, I think a lot of station managers thought I would have an agenda to try to somehow turn the world gay. People did worry. Our only agenda is to make people feel good. It’s an hour of joy.”
On her wife, Portia: “We’re together all the time. We genuinely love each other. Her happiness is my happiness, and vice versa. True love is caring more about the other person’s happiness than your own.”
“I’m sensitive. I like to be around kind, gentle people. It would be really hard for me to be around somebody who is harsh or sarcastic all the time.”
“I love being able to do a monologue every day, make people laugh, give them things, and then go home [knowing] I’ve done something creative.”
“The world is filled with negativity. ‘I want people to watch me and think, ‘I feel good, and I’m going to make somebody else feel good today.’”
“I don’t like to make fun of people. It’s a form of bullying. I’ve been the butt of jokes before—a punch line—and that just gave me more fuel to say I will never do it.”
“I love stories that are inspirational yet have a lot of heartache, because I think that’s what life is,” she says. “Life is filled with struggles and yet there’s always beauty.”
“Dory is just innocent, very childlike, and that’s fun to play. And I can relate to the short-term memory [loss]. I really do say, ‘Nice to meet you,’ at the same time people are saying, ‘Nice to see you again.’ ”
“I think I’m just very real, and people sense that. They know everything about me. This is a platform that’s probably more powerful than politics, and I think if you have a loud voice, you should use it for good.”
“Accept who you are. Unless you’re a serial killer.”
“The only thing that scares me more than space aliens is the idea that there aren’t any space aliens. We can’t be the best that creation has to offer. I pray we’re not all there is. If so, we’re in big trouble.”
“Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s about knowing and accepting who you are.”
“Sometimes you can’t see yourself clearly until you see yourself through the eyes of others. ”
“My point is, life is about balance. The good and the bad. The highs and the lows. The pina and the colada.”
“Laugh. Laugh as much as you can. Laugh until you cry. Cry until you laugh. Keep doing it even if people are passing you on the street saying, ‘I can’t tell if that person is laughing or crying, but either way they seem crazy, let’s walk faster.’ Emote. It’s okay. It shows you are thinking and feeling.”
“True beauty is not related to what color your hair is or what color your eyes are. True beauty is about who you are as a human being, your principles, your moral compass.”
“Find out who you are and figure out what you believe in. Even if it’s different from what your neighbors believe in and different from what your parents believe in. Stay true to yourself. Have your own opinion. Don’t worry about what people say about you or think about you. Let the naysayers nay. They will eventually grow tired of naying.”
“Follow your passion. Stay true to yourself. Never follow someone else’s path unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path. By all means, you should follow that.”
“It makes a big difference in your life when you stay positive.”
“I really don’t think I need buns of steel. I’d be happy with buns of cinnamon.”
“I’m so unfamiliar with the gym, I call it James!”
“My life is perfect even when it’s not.”
“When life gives you lemons….they could really be oranges.”
“Contribute to the world. Help people. Help one person. Help someone cross the street today. Help someone with directions unless you have a terrible sense of direction. Help someone who is trying to help you. Just help. Make an impact. Show someone you care. Say yes instead of no. Say something nice. Smile. Make eye contact. Hug. Kiss. Get naked.”
“The problem with labels is that they lead to stereotypes and stereotypes lead to generalizations and generalizations lead to assumptions and assumptions lead back to stereotypes. It’s a vicious cycle, and after you go around and around a bunch of times you end up believing that all vegans only eat cabbage and all gay people love musicals.”
“You just have to keep driving down the road. It’s going to bend and curve and you’ll speed up and slow down, but the road keeps going.”
“If someone ever says you’re weird, say thank you.”

“When I look back on the stuff I used to wear, I wonder why somebody didn’t try to stop me. Just a friendly warning, ‘You may regret this,’ would have been fine.”
“I enjoy growing older and wiser and learning from my mistakes every single day.”
“Here are the values that I stand for: honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values.”
“It must be around forty, when you’re ‘over the hill.’ I don’t even know what that means and why it’s a bad thing. When I go hiking and I get over the hill, that means I’m past the hard part and there’s a snack in my future. That’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned.”
“I think there’s too much mult-tasking going on. I think people need to quiet down and focus and be still more.”
