Omar Khayyam was a famed Persian poet, mathematician, and astronomer. His most remarkable work as a mathematician is ‘classification and solution of cubic equation’ in which intersections of conics provided the geometric solutions. As an astronomer , he came out with a calendar, which helped in reckoning time more accurately than the one by Pope Gregory XIII five centuries later. He also wrote poetry in form of quatrains. He gained acclaim for his poetry when the same was translated by ‘Edward FitzGerald’ for the English-reading world.
