A French political activist and religious mystic, Simone Weil was a famous and influential Christian thinker. Her passion for the Catholic Church and her life of strict self-discipline and self-control have become widely known and have been part of her influence as her writings, most of which were collected in her diaries and published after her death. Frequently confusing and contradictory, Weil's writings convey her deep sympathy for the plight of others, her disgust for nihilism (the belief that there is no purpose or purpose in existence), and her longing for a union with God.
