Alexandra Stoddard was born November 8, 1941, in Weston, Massachusetts, United States, to Robert Powell and Barbara Rutledge (Green) Johns.
Stoddard grew up on a restored, eighteen-year-old farm in Westport. Connecticut, and spent the summer with her family on a farm in Oneota, New York. At the age of five, Stoddard created a children's garden club. She had been caring for his garden since she was seven and planned to study gardening.
