Novelist
Ralph Ellison, born March 1, 1914 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, studied music before moving to New York City and worked as a writer. He published his best-selling book, Invisible Man's first book, in 1952; it would be considered a misdemeanor to be viewed separately from the perspective of an African-American distributor. Ellison's immortal novel Juneteenth was published after his death in 1999.
