Samuel Smiles (December 23, 1812 - April 16, 1904), was a Scottish writer and reformist, campaigning for a theater franchise. But he concluded that more progress would come from new circumstances than new laws. His masterpiece, Self-Help (1859), promoted resilience and argued that poverty was largely due to intolerant practices, while aggression and materialism and the laissez-faire government. It is called the "Victorian Liberals' bible", and has elevated Somnandi to the status of a celebrity almost all night long.
