William Saroyan (August 31, 1908 - May 18, 1981) was an American writer who wrote many plays and short stories about growing up poor as the son of an Armenian immigrant. These stories were popular during the Great Depression and reflected the experiences of immigrants and the difficulties of the time. Saroyan grew up in Fresno, an Armenian-American center in California, which served as the basis for many of his plans. Despite the hardships of life during the depression, Saroyan's work nevertheless had the hope of living and hope for a life that reflected the undeniable spirit of those immigrants who helped rebuild America.
