In April 1951, at the age of 77, David Oman McKay became the ninth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his nearly 20 years in office, he was revered by members of the Church and many others around the world as God's prophet. While urging Church members to develop a Christlike personality and share the gospel through teaching and example, the Church experienced rapid growth worldwide. In addition to his teachings, his appearance was clearly visible. When they met him, most people noticed that he not only spoke and acted as a prophet but also said that he looked like that. Even in his later years, he was tall and handsome, and his hair was quite white. His face illuminated the good life he was leading.
