Bobby Orr is widely regarded as the greatest defender in the history of hockey. From the time he joined the Boston Bruins at the age of eighteen, Orr made a change in the way hockey was played. Prior to that, defensive players were involved in self-defense. They guarded the entrance to the net and cleared the pipe from the defensive zone, leaving goals to go further. Orr played the game differently. He kept handling the puck rather than simply wiping it, and he often crossed the blue line to participate in offensive sports. Orr broke records defending defenders, and for two seasons became the leading scorer in the entire National Hockey League (NHL)
