William Somerset Maugham, CH (January 25, 1874 - December 16, 1965) was an English playwright, author, and short story writer. He was one of the most popular writers of his time, and although he did not receive the same claim as did the people of his day with their experimental style, he was highly regarded in his work in the 1930s. [1] Maugham's modernity is not portrayed in his style, but in the photographs of his stories, which show the inadequacies of his characters and the modern world.
