Lilly was a doctor and psychoanalyst. He made contributions to the fields of biophysics, neurophysiology, electronics, computer science, and neuroanatomy. He developed and promoted the use of a separation tank as a means of reducing emotions. He also tried to communicate between humans and dolphins. His work helped shape the United States Marine Mammal Protection Act.
His eclectic career began as a general scientist doing research at universities and governments. Gradually, however, he began researching illegal topics. He published several books and had two Hollywood movies based on his work.
