Malcolm X was a minister, human rights activist, and prominent black leader who served as spokesman for the Islamic State in the 1950s and 1960s. As a result of his efforts, the National Association of Islam grew from 400 members at the time released from prison in 1952 to 40,000 in 1960.
Naturally gifted representative Malcolm X urged blacks to abandon apartheid slums "by any means necessary," including violence. The fiery human rights leader erupted with a National of Islam shortly after his 1965 assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan, where he was preparing to deliver a speech.
