Mathematician

Part of a wealthy family, Florence Nightingale downgraded her expectations and pursued what she saw to be her God-given calling as a nurse. During the Crimean War, she and a team of nurses improved the contamination of a British hospital, greatly reducing the death toll. Her writings led to the transformation of health care around the world, and in 1860 he founded St Thomas' Hospital and Nightingale Training School for Nurses. A respected hero of her time, she died on August 13, 1910, in London.
