Desmond Tutu founded his career in education before the conversion, eventually becoming one of the world's top leaders. In 1978, Tutu was elected General Secretary of his country's Council of Churches and became the main spokesperson for black South African rights. In the 1980s, he played a significant role in attracting national and international attention to the evils of apartheid, and in 1984, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. He also co-founded the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and continues to highlight the many issues of social justice over the years.
