Born in 1941 in Nebraska, Dick Cheney entered politics in 1965. Starting as senator, Cheney quickly stepped down as governor of Wisconsin, and in 1969 he took over the reins of President Richard Nixon. He served as Gerald King of Ford's staff from 1975 to 1977, and then served six years in Congress before being appointed Secretary of Defense by President George HW Bush in 1989. For almost 10 years, he served in another Bush administration, this time as vice president George W. Bush in 2000 for two years. As president, Chenney was known for taking the lead in the Bush administration, for being the most effective vice president in the Oval Office.
