Cuba
Statesperson
Beginning in 1958, Fidel Castro and his troops embarked on a campaign of guerrilla warfare that led to the overthrow of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. As the country's new leader, Castro applied the communist domestic policies and established military and economic relations with the Soviet Union which led to strained relations with the United States. Tensions between the United States and Cuba culminated in the 1962 Cecan Missile Crisis. Under Castro, progress was made in health care and education, while maintaining a totalitarian dictatorship in the country and brutally prosecuting or imprisoning anyone who thought he was an enemy of the state.
