Charles Wendell Colson, ("Chuck"), American political and religious actor (born Oct. 16, 1931, Boston, Mass. - died April 21, 2012, Falls Church, Va.), Was a close political aide ( 1969-73) at US Pres. Richard Nixon has also been a respected figure after a campaign of "dirty tricks" developed to tarnish the image of the President's opponents, which has led to the disgrace of Watergate. He was also tried and convicted (1974) for obstructing justice at a covert event to cover up incidents that undermined the credibility of Pentagon commentator, Daniel Ellsberg (who in 1971 opened the New York Times Pentagon Papers). Colson had hired E. Howard Hunt (and others) to steal files from the psychiatrist's office in Ellsberg, and then distributed the alibis to the criminals who surrounded Washington.

QUOTES BY Charles Colton

"The soundest argument will produce no more conviction in an empty head than the most superficial declamation; a feather and a guinea fall with equal velocity in a vacuum"

"When the frustration of my helplessness seemed greatest, I discovered God's grace was more than sufficient. And after my imprisonment, I could look back and see how God used my powerlessness for His purpose. What He has chosen for my most significant witness was not my triumphs or victories, but my defeat."

"Genius, in one respect, is like gold; numbers of persons are constantly writing about both, who have neither."

"Love is an alliance of friendship and animalism; if the former predominates it is passion exalted and refined; if the latter, gross and sensual."

"To know the pains of power, we must go to those who have it; to know its pleasures, we must go to those who are seeking it. The pains of power are real; its pleasures imaginary."

"When we fail our pride supports us and when we succeed, it betrays us."

"He that knows himself, knows others; and he that is ignorant of himself, could not write a very profound lecture on other men's heads."

"Physical courage, which despises all danger, will make a man brave in one way; and moral courage, which despises all opinion, will make a man brave in another."

"Times of great calamity and confusion have been productive for the greatest minds. The purest ore is produced from the hottest furnace. The brightest thunder-bolt is elicited from the darkest storm."
