Lawrence Peter Berra, popularly known as Yogi Berra, was a distinguished American professional baseball catcher, coach and manager. His childhood friend gave him the epithet of ‘Yogi’, as his characteristics resembled a Hindu mystic. By signing the ‘New York Yankees’ in 1942, Yogi achieved his big break. Yogi served the U.S Navy, as a ‘gunner’s mate’ during the ‘D-day Invasion’ in France. Yogi started playing for the Yankees in 1946, and soon established his name as a great catcher and batter. Yogi played in fourteen championships out of which they won ten. Post-retirement, Yogi maintained a bitter-sweet relationship with the ‘Yankees’. Yogi was appointed to manage the ‘Yankees’in1964, but was fired due to an unsuccessful season. Yogi then managed the ‘New York Mets’ from 1972, and propelled them to enter the World Series in 1973. Once again, ‘Yankees’ appointed Yogi as manager in 1984, but he was fired again. He died on September 22, 2015 at the age of 90. His sayings and thoughts are famous as “Yogism” around the world.
