Napoleon
16 Illustrations 22 Maps Napoleon came upon the scene in France when that country was reeling from the bloody terror of the French Revolution. This martial genius then restored, for a time, the nation to greatness and very nearly united Europe under his imperial rule. He also established a concordat with the Church in Rome, thereby reversing the atheistic policy of the revolutionary republic. The man was hugely successful and completely brilliant in his military campaigns. He was finally undone by two factors. The first was his bad judgement in underestimating the religious ardor of both the Spanish and the Russians. Of the latter, he remarked, “What a people!” in wonderment over their “scorched earth” policy, which frustrated his invasion of Holy Russia and ultimately detroyed the Grand Army. The other factor that led to the demise of Napoleon was his betrayal by his generals, who were masonically inspired. Belloc ends his fascinating account of Napoleon with the death bed scene of the Emperor and the dramatic and almost mystical reception of this news by his Mother, then the ward of the Papal state. Notably, Napoleon ended his remarkable career in reconciliation with the Faith. This is a great story of a great man, greatly told.
