[A] republic . . . [is] a government, in which the property of the public, or people, and of every one of them was secure and protected by law . . . implies liberty; because property cannot be secured unless the man be at liberty to acquire, use or part with it, at his discretion, and unless he have his personal liberty of life and limb, motion and rest, for that purpose.

There is no good government but what is republican. That the only valuable part of the British constitution is so; for the true idea of a republic is "an empire of laws, and not of men." That, as a republic is the best of governments, so that particular arrangement of the powers of society, or in other words, that form of government which is best contrived to secure an impartial and exact execution of the law, is the best of republics.

A government of laws, and not of men.

It is now quite lawful for a Catholic woman to avoid pregnancy by a resort to mathematics, though she is still forbidden to resort to physics or chemistry.

Modern invention has banished the spinning wheel, and the same law of progress makes the woman of today a different woman from her grandmother.

It is the immutable law that the more you give away, the more you receive. You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.

It is in the laws of a commonwealth, as in the laws of gaming: Whatsoever the gamesters all agree on, is injustice to none of them.

The first and fundamental law of Nature, which is, to seek peace and follow it.

No man's error becomes his own Law; nor obliges him to persist in it.

If America is a nation of laws as we proclaim, then our immigration laws are part of the package.

Like all other law-abiding Americans, I fully support legal immigration.

When the law disarms good guys, bad guys rejoice.

What is a Rechtsstaat? It is obedience to the existing law.

If there are people who act outside the law, then the state must use legal means to impose law in the interests of majority. That's the way it's done in the U.S., and that's the way it's done in Russia.

You must obey the law, always, not only when they grab you by your special place.

The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away. Once there was this and that; and now-and the ship had gone.

Which is better--to have laws and agree, or to hunt and kill?

The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.

Law is made for man and not man for the law. Wherever we can be sure that the most valuable interests of a nation require that we should decide one way, that way we ought to decide.

It is no disgrace but honourable rather to steal, except such things as the law forbids;

“It may have been a comedy, or it may have been a tragedy. It cost one man his reason, it cost me a blood-letting, and it cost yet another man the penalties of the law. Yet there was certainly an element of comedy. Well, you shall judge for yourselves.”

“Consequently, in the United States the law favors those classes which are most interested in evading it elsewhere.”

“nothing, on the other hand, can be more impenetrable to the uninitiated than a legislation founded upon precedents.”

“Thus the negro transmits the eternal mark of his ignominy to all his descendants; and although the law may abolish slavery, God alone can obliterate the traces of its existence.”
